Editor’s
note
Welcome to Issue 2 of the Worldwide Jack Russell Terrier Magazine
We begin with articles on breed type. You may recall how Issue 1 described the difference in
TYPE versus STYLE. This issue goes further in discussing TYPE. It includes an article from the
well-respected dog breeder, exhibitor, judge, and writer, the late Mr. Richard Beauchamp on
“Setting Breed Type”. He discusses the importance of the silhouette, which is also covered in
the article titled “Interpreting the Breed Standard, Part 2: Balance”. Dr. Claudia Waller Orlandi
cautions us in her “Kennel Blindness” article that evaluation of breed type must be done with
an objective mind because it is far too easy to become kennel blind and lose BREED TYPE for
the sake of personal style.
Monica Fonzo of All Jacks Kennel in Italy shares her perspectives on the breed.
We take a break from the conformation world by including articles on the American Kennel Club’s
new Fit Dog Program, and then have fun with articles on Trick Dogs and Tracking/Mantrailing---
fun and useful activities that you can enjoy with your Russell.
Artist Joyce Danko is interviewed about her love for dogs and capturing them in her realist
paintings. Joyce has had a few JRTs in her life and they are often her subjects.
The next three articles are scientific in nature. The genetics that determine the colors in our Russells
are explained. “Color Genetics of Jack Russell Terriers” includes recently uncovered information
regarding the difference in genes of a tri-colored Russell that holds its black coloration on the
head as it matures versus the so-called fading tricolor dog.
